Becoming a Mason

  1. Stop by and say Hello.
The best idea is to stop by the lodge on one of our nights. We are there almost every first and third Thursday. We will have food from 6pm to 7:30pm.

One thing we require is that anyone interested in joining stop by at least FOUR times prior to submitting a petition to join. This gives you a chance to see who we are and what we do. It also gives us a chance to meet you and know who you are.

  2. Submit a Petition to join.
Once you have visited us a minimum of four times, you can submit a petition to join Millburn Lodge. We keep petitions at the Lodge. A petition will require three signatures of our Members to sponsor you and a payment of $200.00 to cover the cost of the Three Degrees. This is where the visiting four times comes into play. Since we all will know who you are, we will gladly sponsor you if you so choose. The money is a one time fee and can be either cash or check.

  3. A Investigational committee is assigned at next stated business meeting (third Thursday of month)
Once a petition to join has been submitted to the Lodge, it is read at the next stated business meeting (third Thursday of month). Once read, a Investigational committee of three or more members will be assigned to contact you and set up an interview. It is preferred this is done at your residence so we can meet with you and your spouse (if applicable) so we can answer any questions either of you may have. If this is not possible, the Lodge may be used for the interview.

  4. Balloting by Membership at next stated business meeting.
After the interview, the committee will report at the next stated business meeting (third Thursday of month) and report back either favorable or unfavorable. If found favorable, a ballot will be held for your joining the Lodge. This is the origin of the term “black balled,” If the ballot is found in your favor, we will contact you to set-up a day to schedule your First Degree.

  5. Scheduling of First Degree.
If you were found unfavorable by the investigative committee or if the ballot was against you, your full $200.00 petition fee will be refunded to you. Having your ballot found in your favor, we will contact you to schedule your first degree. This is done on a Thursday night and may be on the 1st, 2nd, 4th or 5th Thursday of the month. The 3rd Thursday is reserved for our monthly business meetings and degrees are held on this day only as a day of last resort. Attire is preferred suit & tie, but dress casual is also acceptable. We will have dinner around 6pm to 7:30pm with the Degree to begin at 7:30pm. We also ask that you bring a dish or two to pass for the dinner. This is for the members who will coming out this night for you.

  6. Proficiency Return or Catechism.
Once you have completed your First Degree, you will be assigned some homework and an Intender to assist you. Your homework is a formal memorization of what you have just experienced. Do not worry, we all have done it and you will not be alone. As mentioned, you will be assigned an Intender to assist you in this endeavor. May of us have completed this within a week or two, but most usually take a month or two depending on their schedules. We like to say that you get out of Freemasonry what you put into it. This is your first chance to see what you are made out of.

  7. Scheduling of next Degrees.
Once you have completed your Proficiency Return, we will schedule your Second Degree. From this point on, everything will be just like your First Degree in Step #5 with a Second Degree Return as in Step #6. The Third and final Degree will also repeat in the same manor.

If you have any questions about any of this, just ask us at the Lodge if you decide to stop by. We will always explain all of the above to every new candidate, but this webpage is here to inform you in advance of how this process works and what will be expected of you.
